- The UNIVERSAL CONVERTER
-
- Unregistered Version 1.0
-
- Shareware edition, Copyright 1991, Jeff Napier
- & Another Company
-
-
- What the Universal Converter will do for you:
-
- Over 600 standard and not so standard calculations at your
- fingertips. Super easy to use area, volume, metric to US
- lengths, liquid, weight, and temperature conversions. In
- addition to what you would expect, there are some surprises.
- Convert the DOS cursor to a full-size block for use with LCD
- laptops. Convert musical notes to frequencies and hear them
- play. Convert bytes to kilobytes. Convert standard keys or
- function keys to their ASCII codes. This program puts an
- absolute end to searching through books for a formula or
- conversion constants, then pressing scores of buttons on your
- calculator. As soon as you want an answer, you'll have your
- answer!
-
- How to use the Universal Converter:
-
- Try it. No instruction is necessary! If you get into any
- trouble, remember that the [Esc] key will get you out of
- almost anything you can get into. Experiment with all the
- options on the menu to see everything it can do.
-
- Advanced tips:
-
- If you use a mouse, generally the left mouse button will
- select an action (same as pressing [Enter]) or answer a
- Yes/No question affirmatively. The right button (same as
- [Esc] will abandon an operation and answer questions
- negatively.
- If you prefer sound effects, select SOUND EFFECTS to turn
- the sounds on. If the disk is not write-protected, your
- choice of sound effects on or off will be recorded to the
- disk and will remain in effect until you change it.
- You can change the color options by selecting COLORS from
- the menu. Your choices will be saved to disk and will remain
- in effect until you change them again.
- Once you change the sound effect status or colors, a file
- is created on the disk called UC.CFG. If UC.CFG is deleted,
- the Universal Converter will work fine, but return to
- default settings. Once UC.CFG is created (by changing sound
- effect or color choices) some small notices designed for
- novice users will not reappear. Don't be alarmed when
- something that used to blink, for instance, no longer blinks.
-
- The RESULTS file:
-
- Unless the disk is write-protected, a file is created on the
- disk called RESULTS. Almost every calculation or chart
- presented by the Universal Calculator will be automatically
- saved in the RESULTS file. If the file already exists, new
- information will simply be appended to the end. You can
- examine this file with any text editor or word processing
- program. You can then cut and paste it's information into
- your reports, stories, letters, etc. You can also ignore,
- delete or rename this file whenever it gets really big.
- If running the Universal Converter from a floppy disk, you
- may want to delete the RESULTS file fairly often to maintain
- disk space.
-
- Windows friendly:
-
- To install the Universal Converter for Microsoft Windows
- version 3.0:
-
- 1. Start Windows and highlight the program group in which you
- want to install the Universal Converter.
-
- 2. Select NEW from the box in the upper left corner. Select
- PROGRAM. When asked for the DESCRIPTION type UC or Converter,
- or whatever you want to appear under the icon. When asked
- for PROGRAM, type the drive and sub-directory into which
- you have copied the Universal Converter files, a backslash
- and then UC.EXE. For instance:
-
- C:\WINSTUFF\UC.EXE
-
- 3. Then select CHANGE ICON and type the drive and
- sub-directory again, a backslash, then UC.ICO.
-
- 4. Select OK and the icon should appear in your selected
- program group.
-
- 5. To use the Universal Converter from within Windows,
- double-click it's icon. When done, hold down the [Ctrl] key
- and press [Esc] simultaneously.
- Because it is relatively small compared to many other
- programs used from within Windows, the Universal Converter
- swaps very fast!
